How we work

Our interior process โ€” no surprises

  1. Step 1: Walkthrough

We tour each room with you during a free 30โ€“60 minute visit, noting repairs, colors, and furniture.

  2. Step 2: Scope

Rooms, surfaces, repairs, colors, and sheens are listed in a clear written estimate before anything gets scheduled.

  3. Step 3: Surface prep

Nail holes and cracks get filled and sanded, trim gaps caulked, and patches or stains spot-primed.

  4. Step 4: Wash

Scuffed walls, greasy kitchen surfaces, and dusty trim are cleaned so the new paint grips instead of peeling.

  5. Step 5: Product & sheen selection

We pick Sherwin-Williams products and sheens room by room, based on moisture, traffic, and how each space gets used.

Interior painting Knoxville TN work with our crew is the surfaces in your scope, the wall repairs that let fresh paint look smooth, and cover for everything that is not being painted. We leave rooms usable at the end of the day.

What interior painting Knoxville TN includes

Rooms and surfaces:

  • Walls and ceilings, including textured and vaulted ceilings.
  • Baseboards, crown, window and door casings, and doors.
  • Stairwells and two-story foyers.
  • Accent walls and full color changes.
  • Painted built-ins and shelving that are already part of the room.
  • Bedrooms, guest rooms, home offices, kitchens, and baths.

If you want a second opinion on color, we will give it at the walkthrough. The longer color notes are in how to choose paint colors for a room. Sheen names are in the Sherwin-Williams sheen guide.

Most rooms need wall work first. We fill nail holes, patch dents and larger drywall damage, repair hairline cracks, and blend texture so a patch does not flash. Flashing is a dull or shiny blotch where a patch soaks up paint differently from the wall around it. Trim joints that open with heating and cooling get a flexible caulk. Then we spot-prime and cut in.

Floors, furniture, countertops, light fixtures, and door hardware are covered or removed before any paint is opened. In a busy house we order the rooms so a bedroom or the kitchen can come back into use, and we clean up every afternoon.

Sheen by room

Sheen matters as much as color. Flat hides small flaws on ceilings and in low-traffic rooms. Eggshell and satin clean up better in living areas, bedrooms, and hallways. Kitchens and baths need a sheen that can be wiped. Trim and doors are usually semi-gloss so the lines stay crisp.

We use Sherwin-Williams interior paints. The written estimate lists the product and the sheen for each room. Cut-in lines are checked in the light you actually use. Each coat gets the dry time on the label, even when humid weather slows the film. East Tennessee humidity shows up indoors. Baths and laundry rooms are where a wipeable sheen earns its place. We do not use a slogan in place of that sheen.

Plaster, drywall, and old trim

Houses in Fountain City, South Knoxville, and around Bearden often have plaster, layered trim paint, and original doors. Plaster needs patient patching and a primer that bonds to what is underneath. Newer houses in West Knoxville subdivisions often have builder-grade flat paint that scuffs, so the change is usually a tougher sheen in a similar color.

Plaster over wood lath cracks in hairline lines as a house settles. Old repairs show through fresh paint unless they are feathered and primed. Some mid-century rooms mix plaster, early drywall, and wood paneling. Paneling can be painted after a real cleaning and a bonding primer. Without that primer the finish scratches off. Later drywall is mostly nail pops, patches, and a sheen upgrade.

Many older trim coats are oil enamel. Latex over glossy oil peels in sheets. At the estimate we test a small spot. Rubbing alcohol softens latex and does not soften oil. Where the trim is oil, we degloss and use a bonding primer. That step is why the trim still looks right later.

A brown ring from an old roof or plumbing leak will bleed through ordinary ceiling paint. Once the leak is fixed, we seal the stain with a stain-blocking primer before the ceiling color goes on.

What changes the written estimate

We do not publish prices. What moves the scope:

  • Ceiling height and stairwells.
  • How many colors and sheens change from room to room.
  • Trim and door count, especially a color change.
  • Wall repairs, stains, and water marks that need extra primer.
  • How much furniture we are moving and working around.

The written estimate spells this out before we start. The visit takes 30โ€“60 minutes and does not cost you a fee. Any change after we start is agreed in writing before we continue.

A short list, one room or a door and some trim, may fit Painter for a Day. A full interior stays on this page. If you also want the outside, that scope is exterior painting.

Questions

How long is the house disrupted?

A single room or an open living area is often a day or two once prep is done. A whole-home interior takes longer. The estimate says which rooms stay open.

Do you move furniture?

We protect and shift lighter pieces as scoped at the walkthrough. Large, fragile, or valuable items are planned with you before day one.

What about odor and drying?

We use Sherwin-Williams coatings and ventilate as the product allows. Humidity can slow drying. We will not put a second coat on a soft film just to hit a date.

Do you repaint a color change?

Yes. A dark color to a light one, or an old accent wall, may need primer first. We note that at the walkthrough and put it in the written estimate.

Are touch-ups included?

Punch-list items are handled at the final walkthrough. Every job we paint carries a 3-year written warranty.

Living in the house while we paint

We keep a path through the house. Drop cloths stay taped down in the room we are in, not across every hallway for the whole job. Switch plates and door hardware come off when they are in the way of a cut-in, go into a labeled bag, and go back on when that room is dry. If a bath has to stay in use, we say which one and we do not store tools in it.

Ventilation is a window or a fan the product allows, not a promise that you will smell nothing. Humidity in a closed room is why we sometimes wait on the second coat until the next morning.
