An exterior painting quote checklist is how you line up scopes that do not match. The gap is usually what is included: how the house is washed, how much scraping and priming is planned, which products are named, and whether anyone will wait for dry weather. When you are ready to book the work, go to exterior painting in Knoxville.
The exterior painting quote checklist
A complete written estimate should answer each of these:
- Wash method. Pressure wash, soft wash, or hand scrub, and whether mildew and pollen are treated.
- Scrape and sand. Failing paint removed and edges feathered, not a vague "spot scrape."
- Wood repair. How soft or rotted wood is handled, as its own line.
- Caulk. A flexible product for joints that move with heat and cold.
- Primer. Which surfaces get it: bare wood, repairs, stains, chalky walls.
- Products named. Brand, product line, and sheen for body, trim, and doors. "Premium paint" with no brand is not a product. We name Sherwin-Williams and the line in our own estimates.
- Coats. How many finish coats, and whether that changes by wall.
- Protection. Landscaping, walkways, windows, and roofs.
- Schedule and weather. What happens on damp or high-pollen days.
- Warranty. How long, what it covers, and whether it is in writing. Our line is 3-year written. We do not describe a longer term.
- Cleanup and a final walkthrough. Who checks the job before the crew leaves.
What to question
- A single line that says the exterior gets two coats, with no prep listed.
- No product named.
- A warranty that is not written down.
- Pressure to sign the same day.
- A much lower number with no explanation of which checklist lines were left out. We do not print dollar amounts here. Ask which steps disappeared. That usually explains the gap.
Why the prep lines matter here
Humid summers slow drying. Freeze-thaw opens caulk. West walls chalk in afternoon sun. Spring pollen coats ledges. Paint over dirt, chalk, or damp wood peels early no matter the can. The prep lines matter more than the color names.
How we write our estimates
We walk the house and write what we see, wall by wall. Prep days come before color. We name the Sherwin-Williams products. We wait out bad drying conditions instead of forcing a coat. Every job we paint carries a 3-year written warranty. The service page is exterior painting in Knoxville.
Questions to ask every painter
What prep is included, line by line?
If the answer is vague, the warranty usually is too.
Who checks the job once the crew starts?
Ask whether the person who walked the house comes back during the work.
When should you wait instead of painting?
When surfaces are damp, pollen is heavy, or temperature and humidity are outside the product's range. Waiting a day beats repainting a wall next season.
Do darker colors change the process?
Often. Dark colors hold more heat. That matters on vinyl and on west-facing walls. Ask before you lock a color.

How to use this exterior painting quote checklist on a real estimate
Read the exterior painting quote checklist against the paper, not against the salesperson's tone. Put the estimates side by side and look for the same lines. If one scope says wash and the other does not, they are not the same job. If one names Sherwin-Williams and a sheen and the other says quality paint, ask for the product name before you compare anything else. A missing name is not a small detail. It is the whole film.
Walk the lines in order. Wash method should say whether mildew is treated or the crew is only rinsing dust. Scrape should say failing paint is removed and the edge is feathered, not that someone will spot-scrape as needed. Wood repair should be its own line, because soft fascia found after a wash changes the job. Caulk should be named at moving joints. Primer should say which surfaces get it: bare wood, stains, chalky spots, and repairs. Coats should say how many finish coats, and whether a chalked west wall is treated differently from a shaded north wall.
Protection is part of the scope. Plants, walks, windows, and outlets should be mentioned. Schedule should say what happens if the wall is damp or pollen is heavy. A crew that will not wait is telling you the prep is optional. Warranty should be in writing. Our line is 3-year written. We do not describe a longer term, and you should not treat a verbal forever as a match for a written term.
Ask who comes back after the crew starts. The person who walked the house should be able to answer a question about a rotten board without a second introduction. Ask what is excluded. A low number often means the bottom course, the soffit, or the detached garage was left out. We do not print dollar amounts here. The gap you can see is the missing line, not a figure.
Dark colors need their own question. They hold heat. On vinyl that can be a reason to change the color, not the sheen. Body siding and trim can be different sheens. If the estimate uses one sheen for both and does not say why, ask. Doors are often a harder sheen than the field.
When the lines match and you want the work done, the service page is exterior painting in Knoxville. This checklist does not replace that page. It tells you what to look for before you book the walkthrough. The free estimate we write still comes after we see the house. Call or text 865-606-6999. Bring any color approval you already have so it can be copied into the scope instead of guessed.
A useful comparison takes an hour at the kitchen table. Mark each checklist line yes, no, or vague. Vague counts as no until someone rewrites it. Two vague estimates are not a tie. They are two jobs you cannot see yet. Ask for the rewrite before you choose.
