Fence Staining in Knoxville, TN
Fences fail from the ground up, not the top down. Posts and bottom rails sit closest to soil moisture and sprinkler overspray, so that’s where rot starts — usually well before the visible face boards look bad. We inspect the bottom foot of every post and rail before staining over any of it.
Our Process
- Inspect posts and bottom rails for rot before staining over them
- Pressure wash to remove dirt, algae, and old failing stain
- Replace any boards that are soft or splitting
- Full dry time before applying a penetrating stain rated for ground-level exposure
Stain vs. Paint on a Fence
We stain, not paint, most of the fences we work on. Paint sits on top of the wood and traps moisture underneath, which speeds up rot on ground-level structures. A penetrating stain lets the wood breathe while still repelling water and blocking UV — it typically outlasts paint on a working privacy or picket fence.
