Then we roll the field with a nap that matches the texture. A smooth wall does not get a heavy nap. A light texture does not get a foam cover that skips the low spots.
Sheen, rooms, and trim
Ceilings are usually flat. Flat hides small repairs and does not flash when a lamp hits it. Walls in living rooms and bedrooms are often eggshell. Kitchens, baths, and halls get a satin or a comparable wipeable sheen because those surfaces are cleaned. Trim, doors, and windows get a harder sheen, usually semi-gloss, so the brush marks level and the edge stays crisp.
If the trim color is changing from a dark enamel to a light one, we prime. Dark reds and deep stains telegraph. Built-in shelves and window seats that are already painted can be included in the room when the list says so. That is the same paint system as the trim. It is not a separate refinishing trade.
We label the products on the estimate. When we name a brand, it is Sherwin-Williams, with the sheen written next to the room. You should be able to buy a quart later and hit a scuff without guessing the line.
What we look at in an older house
Plaster and wood trim are what we plan around. You choose the color. We do not hand you a period palette. We do look at picture rail, window stools, and base that has been painted in place for years. Build-up at the edges is sanded back where it is thick enough to show. A window that is painted shut is not forced. We tell you, and we paint what moves.
Baths and kitchens still need the caulk at the trim to be sound, and the wall sheen to be one you can wipe. We ventilate while we work. If a lower wall feels damp, we stop and find out why before we coat it. Paint over an active leak will fail, and a new color will not hide that.
Ceilings with hairline cracks are skimmed or primed depending on how wide the crack is. A popcorn or heavy texture is painted, not scraped, unless that scrape is its own agreed scope. We do not fold a texture removal into a wall repaint.
From one room to the whole interior
One room, a hall, and a bath can be a short list. A full interior is walls, ceilings, and trim, sequenced so we are not cutting in over wet floors. Doors are painted off the hinges when the schedule allows, so the edges get coated. Closets are in or out on the written list.
