How We Check If a Deck Is Ready to Stain

Before we bring out any stain, we run a simple water-bead test: sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads up, the old finish is still doing its job and it’s too early to restain. If it soaks in within a minute or two, the wood is ready. Staining over a deck that isn’t ready wastes material and the new coat won’t bond.

• Pressure washing at a low enough setting to clean without gouging softwood
• Full dry time before staining — usually 24-48 hours depending on humidity, longer on shaded decks
• Sanding any raised grain or splintering boards
• Replacing any soft or rotted boards before staining over them
• A penetrating semi-transparent or solid stain matched to the wood’s condition, not just the color you picked

Solid vs. Semi-Transparent

If the deck boards are older and the grain has weathered unevenly, a solid stain hides that inconsistency and gives more UV protection — useful on the lake-facing side of a house that gets full afternoon sun. If the wood is in good shape and you want the grain to show, a semi-transparent stain looks better but needs recoating more often, typically every 2-3 years instead of 4-5.
