Most of the siding we repaint in Farragut is either vinyl from the subdivisions built in the 1990s and 2000s, or Hardie board (fiber cement) on newer construction. They’re not the same job. Vinyl flexes with temperature and needs paint formulated to move with it; Hardie board is more like painting a rigid, slightly textured masonry panel. Using the wrong product on either one is the most common reason a siding repaint fails early.
Painting Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding expands and contracts a surprising amount across a Tennessee summer-to-winter swing. Standard paint cracks under that movement. We use 100% acrylic paints formulated for vinyl, and we stay within the manufacturer’s approved color range — going too dark absorbs more heat than the vinyl was engineered for and can cause warping. This is the single most common mistake we see homeowners make when they pick a color themselves.
Painting Hardie Board / Fiber Cement Siding
Newer Farragut homes often have factory-primed or factory-finished Hardie board. It holds paint well once it’s properly cleaned and any caulking at the seams is intact, but the factory finish can chalk over time, which needs to be washed off completely before repainting or the new coat won’t bond.
